Chapter 14 shows you how to enhance a site with video clips. Chapter 16 shows you how to use CSS3 transitions, transforms, and animations. Chapters 17 and 18 show you how to design and deploy a website. Chapters 19 and 20 introduce other professional skills like how to use JavaScript and jQuery and how to use development tools like Bootstrap, SASS, and Emmet. And after you've learned all the skills that you need, this book becomes the best on-the-job reference you've ever used. Until now, my websites looked great but have been coded with what seems like duct-tape and bubble-gum methods, just for appearances and not for professionalism or compliance. This book taught me all that is possible with HTML and CSS coding. That's what one web designer posted about a previous edition of Murach's HTML and CSS.

Now, this 5th Edition updates and improves all the HTML and CSS content in the book and its in full color so its easier than ever to learn from it. In fact, whether youre a web designer, a JavaScript programmer, a server-side programmer, or a rookie, this book delivers all the HTML and CSS skills that you need on the job. This book begins with an 8-chapter hands-on course that teaches you HTML and CSS from scratch, including the latest HTML and CSS features. Chapter 15 shows you how to use CSS transitions, transforms, and animations. Chapters 16 and 17 show you how to design and deploy a website.

And chapter 18 introduces you to JavaScript, a must-have language thats the next step for many web developers. One final point: After teaching you all the HTML and CSS skills that you need, this book becomes the best on-the-job reference youve ever used. This Lab Manual contains all the review materials, practice exercises, and coding specifications you need as you learn and apply HTML and CSS. If you're developing websites, you have to know JavaScript. There's no way around it today. And this latest edition of Murach's popular book teaches you how to code modern JavaScript that conforms to the ECMAScript standards, the way the pros do.

At the same time, it teaches you how to use jQuery, the classic JavaScript library, to handle the DOM scripting that gives JavaScript so much of its power. And it works no matter whether you're a web designer who's coming from a background in HTML and CSS or a server-side programmer who's coded in languages like PHP, C , Java, and Python. PHP and MySQL are two of today's most popular, open-source tools for server-side programming. That means there's a continuing demand for web developers who know how to use PHP and MySQL at the professional level. And with this book, you can become one of them!

In fact, in just the first 6 chapters, you will create a database-driven website that implements the MVC pattern, the way the best professionals do. Then, the rest of the book lets you build on that base to develop a full set of professional skills. The problem is that jQuery is difficult to learn, especially for those with limited programming experience. But now, this new edition of our jQuery book makes it easier than ever to learn how to use jQuery to create the dynamic user interfaces, fast response times, and special effects that todays users expect. In brief, sections 2 and 3 of this book present the essential jQuery and jQuery UI User Interface skills for developing professional jQuery applications.

With those skills, you will be able to add all of the popular jQuery features to your web pages: image swaps, image rollovers, slide shows, accordions, tabs, carousels, and much more. Then, section 4 shows you how to use Ajax and JSON to get data from a web server and add it to a web page without reloading the page. It also shows how to use Ajax and JSON with the APIs for websites like Flickr and Google Maps and with HTML5 APIs like Geolocation, Web Storage, and Web Workers. What about section 1? It provides a four-chapter crash course in the JavaScript skills that you need to use jQuery. That means you do not need to know JavaScript before you start using this book, and that makes this the right book for programmers who are not familiar with JavaScript, as well as for programming novices. This section also becomes the ideal reference for the JavaScript thats used for the jQuery applications in this book or for any jQuery application.

The last section of this book shows you how to use jQuery Mobile to develop mobile websites. This requires little or no programming, and it is a great alternative when its impractical to rebuild an established website with Responsive Web Design. Today, JavaScript is used in That is why every web developer should know how to use JavaScript. The problem is that JavaScript is surprisingly difficult to learn, not only for programming novices but also for experienced programmers. But now, Murachs JavaScript makes it easier than ever to become an accomplished JavaScript programmer.

To make that possible, section 1 of this book presents a six-chapter course in JavaScript that gets you off to a great start. This section works for programming novices as well as experienced programmers because it lets you set your own pace. When you finish this section, you will be able to write, test and debug JavaScript applications of your own. So you can get it perfectly. Have been using on-line sources such as w3schools and others. However, a book like this is necessary as it organizes all those tidbits of html and css that one picks up online. It is a stand alone reference and you don't need to go to those online references to learn html and you can do it completely from this book.

However it's very difficult to do things completely online as you just end up with many clips you put in a loose leaf book. It's organized around building a website using HTML5 and CSS3 with each chapter dealing with different design concepts. Also the book is nicely printed on clean white paper in a nice easy to read font. A disclaimer: the colored index tabs are my own, added after purchase. The writing and exposition in this book is unusually good, and the formatting text on the left, examples and pictures on the right works very well. The book is a joy to read, and the concepts they cover, they cover very clearly. This book is excellent for someone first learning HTML or CSS, and it covers how to combine the basic concepts to build the most common things one will want to put on a web site, such as multi-tier menus. The coverage is not really adequate for a working professional or someone aspiring to be.

For example, the "display" property is not adequately described, and the flexible box model is not covered at all. For responsive menus, they punt the design to an external jquery library: fine for getting a tiny web site off the ground, but not going to help you understand how an existing company did it in-house. I think if you combine this book with Gasston's CSS3 book, you'd have a winning combination which collectively cover what you need to know. This is a really good book on HTML. But reading through this book was WAY more worthwhile than the class, which I ended up dropping because the professor was teaching things that I realized were completely outdated and flat out wrong after reading this book.

Needed to learn how to make web pages. Took a class and this was the required textbook. Finished with the class but I still use this book as reference material. There is so much here and it has helped me a great deal. Nice book.
